Nice cushions. The first three tracks from this 1975 album on Philadelphia International just blow me away. It's the mid 70s and social conscience is de rigeur. People Power gets things started with great energy, especially when the vocals come in after 30 seconds. The feel good message keeps swinging along with high hats just a little less metronomic than on a lot of Philly Soul and better for it. If we all pull together we really can make a difference. Yeah baby. Next up, America, has a hopeful message both subtle and patriotic (in the real sense of the word rather than 'with us or against us') sung and spoken over skittering percussion and lush Bobby Martin production. Third is Let The Dollar Circulate, which takes the pace down a bit and just cries out to be looped, EQed and stretched by someone like J Dilla. Oh.

Nice! I had never heard the track where Dilla got "Dolla" from. Thanks for these!
ReplyDeleteHoly Hell my man! Get outta my head. There's no need for me to ever consider serious blogging if you're gonna know everything I'd want to hear/share anyway. Great start, I look forward to the future.
ReplyDeletei have just discoveredc your site today and I must just say THANKS! now my tastes have moved away form Punk and Metal there has been a need for a mix of the cerebral and the funky, and this site fulfils that remit in spades. consequently I have been strip mining it and making an ever-lengthening list of items to purchase. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking me! :)
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks for these tracks! I don't have any of Billy Paul's albums yet, but these are great, esp. "Let The Dollar Circulate" and "People Power".. Truly some of the best Philly soul I've heard so far..
Billy Paul is one of my faves. I have his greatest hits album containing my favorite song of his, Only The Strong Survive, which I also have as 12" on wax. Great website BTW. I've added your link to my blog.
